Pride in Our Past April 28th - June 30th 2012

An award from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) of £35,000 last year has enabled volunteers to investigate lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender history in Plymouth, in collaboration with the Plymouth Pride Forum, and Plymouth and West Devon Record Office, and to create this archive to access, frame and interpret this unconsidered aspect of Plymouth’s history.

The idea of the archive was originally born because much of the specific history of the LGBT community is currently stored only in the memories of its older members. Until now, there has been little evidence of these fascinating lives. Interviews have been providing a means to redress the balance – with volunteers working as oral historians and community archivists, speaking with a diverse cross section of the LGBT community about their experiences of living in Plymouth. They have also been collecting photographs and other documents and memorabilia that record the recollections of older members of the community who wish to share their memories of places, people and events.

This thought-provoking exhibition spans three centuries and captures the heart of the changing ‘scene’ over the decades, as well as the political struggle both past and present. It also looks to the future for both the Plymouth LGBT community and their place in the city’s wider community.
