Plymouth University provided the venue on 4th February for the judging of the Pride in Our Past Photography competition. The judging panel consisted of Ryan Huws, Anna Whittall and, the city’s archivist, Louisa Mann. Unfortunately, Chris Parnell was unable to attend due to college commitments.
All the entries for the competition were laid out for the judges perusal and could be viewed in both hard copy and electronically. The initially shortlisting began with each judge selecting their top ten. Then, after five rounds, of short listing, five photographs remained. These were then reduced to a top three and finally our winner.
Of the winning photograph, all three judges said they felt it really encompassed the brief of the competition to submit a photograph which represented LGBT life in the city of Plymouth. Also, as a photographer herself, Anna felt the composition of the photograph could only be described as “perfect”.
The winner, Kevin Kelland, was notified of his win later that weekend and attended the Pride in Our Past Drop In session, on 18th February at The Arts Centre, to be formally presented with his prize by archive coordinator Alan Butler. Kevin was delighted with the success of his photo and is keen to become more involved with the Pride in Our Past project.
The winning photo will feature strongly (along with other short-listed entries) in the Pride in Our Past exhibition taking place at the Plymouth City Museum between the 28th April and 30th June 2012.
